Vintage genuine morocco leather compact Bible in good overall condition, still suitable for reading as well as collecting. While sewn binding looks to have loosened just slightly behind hinges, it is still holding together well enough for careful use. A small amount of previous owner markings were observed in the text, but the vast majority of pages are free of markings. The date of printing is not given by the publisher, but the printer’s code from the rear endpapers is shown in photos. Notable damage to a series of page corners shown in photos. Leather shows light to moderate physical wear but remains supple and condition is better than average for a vintage Bible of this kind. Please see all photos. ESCONI is pleased to offer its first hard cover publication (2006) by Jack Wittry on the world famous Mazon Creek fossil plants entitled: “The Mazon Creek Fossil Flora”. This Mazon Creek fossil flora reference book by Jack Wittry was published (and printed) in 2006 as a taxonomic guide that includes descriptions and color photos of species that collectors are likely to find in the field or see in most large collections. The Mazon Creek fossil flora of Illinois are still among the most diverse known flora of Paleozoic age in North America. Recently (2020), this 2006 version of “The Mazon Creek Fossil Flora” was significantly updated and expanded by Jack Wittry in his latest book entitled: “A Comprehensive Guide to the Fossil Flora of Mazon Creek”, which is also for sale on eBay. A companion fossil animal book was published by ESCONI in 2012 entitled: “The Mazon Creek Fossil Fauna” by Jack Wittry, which is also for sale on eBay. ESCONI has been very involved in the identification of Mazon Creek fossils for many years, and has published several reference books – from the legendary George Langford books, to the keys to identify Mazon Creek fossils, to the books by Jack Wittry, who is a Research Fellow at Northeastern Illinois University and a Collections Associate at the Field Museum in Chicago, Illinois. These books were created with the help, expertise, specimens, and work of many members of the Earth Science Club of Northern Illinois. UNCLE REMUS by Joel Chandler Harris 5 AUDIO CD Many readers will already be familiar with Uncle Remus’ favorite animal characters – Br’er Rabbit and Br’er Fox among them – and some of the popular tales concerning them. (To this day, “tar baby” as an expression for a particularly sticky situation that is almost impossible to solve, has passed into the English language and common use.) Even people who have never read any of these tales will know exactly why you don’t throw a rabbit into a briar patch, mainly because Walt Disney produced his first movie ever to use professional actors with animation, called “Song of the South”, based on the Uncle Remus tales. Joel Chandler Harris, a newsman in Georgia, grew up listening to folktales told by the local black population. Later, he published his version of these tales in a series of stories printed in the “Atlanta Constitution.” The tales of, and by, Harris’ chief character Uncle Remus, an old black man scrabbling to make his living in the post-Civil War South, were extremely popular and widely read. Harris’ use of innovative spelling to give the reader a sense of the black dialect was considered novel. While this is not a book that will pass a current political correctness test, due to its use of labels for black folks which have gone out of polite conversation, Uncle Remus is a largely sympathetic look at post-war plantation life. Uncle Remus himself is a warm, folksy man of good humor and dry wit, and after finishing his animal stories, the remaining sayings and tales are a moment of history frozen in amber.
